Author/ Illustrator: 蔡兆伦

An award winning Chinese picture book by acclaimed author, Cai Zhaolun, this book allows children to experience what it’s like to be visually impaired. The author makes clever use of black and white to outline images with simple but contrasting lines. The overall picture design of this book is unconventional. He described an "invisible" boy who was walking ‘blindfolded’. The boy’s monologue revealed all kinds of invisible feelings ranging from fear, anxiety, tension to confusion, which stemmed from his inability to see. When we can't see, the movement of our body slows down. On the contrary, our other senses become heightened to make up for the lack of visual ability. Finally, when the little boy uncovered his eyes, what appeared in front of him was a colourful park. The ingenuity of the author in using vivid colour contrast lets children subtly experience what visual impairment is like, and lets them appreciate the beauty of sight and maybe they’ll develop empathy for visually impaired people. Suitable for children and even adults of all ages.
