Rice Growth Process
Rice plant growth can be divided into three agronomic stages of development::
1. Vegetative (germination to panicle initiation (PI));
2. Reproductive (panicle initiation (PI) to heading;
3. Ripening (heading to maturity)
萌发 Germination
Germination in rice occurs when the first shoots and roots start to emerge from the seed and the rice plant begins to grow.
幼苗 Seedling
The seedling stage starts right after the first root and shoot emerge, and lasts until just before the first tiller appears. During this stage, seminal roots and up to five leaves develop.
分蘖 Tillering
A tiller is a stem produced by grass plant, that springs from the root or bottom of the original plant. The late vegetative phase starts when tillering begins, which extends from the appearance of the first tiller until the maximum number of tillers is reached.
拔节 Jointing
Also known as internode elongation. Internode elongation begins about the time panicle initiation is occurring, continues until full plant height is reached and is followed by heading. Panicle initiation means that the panicle itself begins to differentiate into the number of potential grains for each panicle.
孕穗 Booting
The first sign that the rice plant is getting ready to enter its reproductive phase is a bulging of the leaf stem that conceals the developing panicle, called the ‘booting’ stage.
抽穗 Heading
The time when the panicle begins to emerge from the boot. Panicle emergence may take 10 yo 14 days depending on how many tillers there are on the plant.
扬花 Flowering stage
Once exertion begins, flowering are initiated. It refers to the events between the opening and closing of the spikelet (floret) and lasts for 1 to 21⁄2 hours during which time pollination occurs.
Ripening follows fertilization and can be subdivided into milky, dough, yellow, ripe, and maturity stages
乳熟 Milk stage
At this stage, the developing starch grains in the kernel are soft and the interior of the kernel is filled with a white liquid resembling milk.
蜡熟 Dough stage
The starch in the grain is beginning to become firm but is still soft.
完熟 Ripening
The whole grain is hard and ready for harvest.
